Autumn 2021 Pop-up Primrose Hill Lecture - Live and Online
Joan Bakewell in conversation with Andrew O’Hagan - Love Where You Live
Journalist, broadcaster and author Joan Bakewell has lived in Primrose Hill for more than 50 years. In 2010 she was awarded a life peerage and in 2017 she was named Humanist of The Year. She has long been a popular, vociferous and influential champion of the rights of older people to a good and fruitful life.
A couple of years ago she realised that it was no longer practical for her to live in her former family house and she made the difficult decision to downsize to a smaller home nearby. This meant confronting what she terms 'the next segment of life', disposing of many of her beloved possessions and reconciling herself to the uncertainty and challenges of a fresh start.
In her new book - The Tick of Two Clocks: A Tale of Moving On - she tells the story of this process, reflecting on her experiences of living in North London and on the importance of neighbours and community. In the telling of her own story she draws parallels with the experiences of so many other people in the world who are living longer, facing change, and voluntarily or otherwise, moving on.
Join us to hear Joan in conversation with local author Andrew O'Hagan. Andrew is a novelist, essayist, Editor-at-Large of The London Review of Books and a Fellow of The Royal Society of Literature. His most recent novel Mayflies was published in paperback in May.
